A Commitment to Liberation

We Serve Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC)
We Want to Destigmatize Mental Health
Dr. Burdine’s approach to mental healthcare recognizes and reckons with the longstanding consequences of exclusionary, traumatic, and even violent mental health practices that have borne out stigma and societal pressures that have created barriers to desperately needed services in marginalized communities. Here are some of the many myths and pressures that paint therapy as nonviable to Black & Indigenous folx and People of Color:
My family thinks seeing a therapist is disrespectful. They think I’m ungrateful for the way I was raised, and seeing a psychologist reflects as insulting to my parents.
I’ve had a very religious upbringing and seeking psychological services means I don’t have faith.
Psychology is for white people, by white people.
How can a therapist help me if they don’t know me? I’m not going to get help from a stranger.
I’ll look weak or “crazy” if I seek mental health services. I’m BIPOC & LGBTQIA+, life is just harder for me and therapy can’t change that.
Some of the same psychiatrists and psychologists who put people like me in institutions are still practicing and teaching. Psychology has nothing to offer me that close friends can’t.
I want to see a therapist, but I know they’ll just want to talk about me being BIPOC & LGBTQIA+. I have the same issues white/straight/cisgender people have.
We’re dedicated to debunking many of the myths and opposition surrounding mental health and wellness that we face as BIPOC & LGBTQIA+ people, and creating spaces that aren’t just inclusive of you, but are meant just for you.

FAQs about Therapy
Is Therapy Right For me?
If you are reading this, then therapy is right for you. Therapy is right for everyone. The key is finding the services, methodologies, and counselor that fit your needs. Engaging with a counselor that not only understands, but can relate to and identify with specific cultural and social experiences you face is a significant contributor to successful therapy.
What can I expect from counseling with Dr. Burdine (she/her/hers)?
For all types of counseling offered (individual, intimate partner(s), and group), you can expect her full attention and clear communication during your session. During your initial evaluation, you’ll discuss your intentions and goals for counseling with Dr. Burdine, and from there you’ll begin your journey to healing and liberation together.
Can I work with Dr. Burdine if I know her personally?
This depends. If you are interested in psychological services it’s important that Dr. Burdine has an unbiased perspective on what you share. It’s hard to do that if you know each other personally, so friends and family are not eligible for psychological services. The Soul Siblings Community is a great way to be connected to Dr. Burdine’s work, and friends and family are welcome to participate since it does not constitute a therapeutic relationship. If you are interested in consulting or training, having a previous working relationship or other professional connection is okay. Sometimes it’s even helpful depending on the circumstances.
How Much Does Counseling Cost?
See Fees & Forms of Payment for individual counseling rates.
*We do not take insurance as a form of payment. If you are insured and would like to use a mental health care benefit for individual counseling, consult with your insurance provider about opportunities for reimbursement for out-of-network mental health services. If you are underinsured or uninsured and our fees would impose financial hardship, please find us on Open Path Collective for limited sliding scale openings. The Loveland Foundation and National Queer & Trans Therapists of Color Network Therapy Fund are also funding sources that may be of assistance.
How can I help others afford therapy?
Kimberly Burdine Psychological Services & Consulting is dedicated to accessible and equitable psychological services and committed to seeking out ways and partnerships to make counseling accessible to those experiencing financial hardships or otherwise not in a position to pay out of pocket for services. If you would like to partner or contribute to funding for no- or low-cost therapy for Queer & Trans BIPOC contact us.
