A WORD
FROM DR. BURDINE
When we begin a working relationship, my first step is to understand your needs. I ask questions that help facilitate a deeper self-exploration, whether as your consultant or your therapist. I want to know about the underlying concerns that bring folx to my services, and I want to know who you are, your context. It is also important that I validate the ways that systems and circumstances prevent us from living our best lives.
If there is one thing I can guarantee in our work together, it is that I'll make full effort to be effective! I aim to be affirming and make sure that everyone I work with feels seen, valued and believed. I also intend to offer support that is challenging and helps you achieve your goals.
While my career has not taken the most linear path, I'm grateful for the journey. This journey (that I’m still on!) continues to fulfill my desire to help others and my passion for learning and teaching. I use creativity, each and every day. Being a psychologist is a perfect fit for me, and I love being a therapist, teacher, researcher and consultant. It's the life!
I am committed to the healing and liberation of Black folx, and I have come to understand that to do this, I must keep that in the forefront of my work. I look to direct my efforts toward the experiences of those in the margins of Black life. My work is centered in imagining liberation and healing free from anti-Black racism, colonialism, state violence, cissexism, ableism, capitalism, xenophobia and any form of systemic oppression.
Apart from professional work, this commitment is reflected in my dedication to live with integrity, be a light in the world, help take care of the planet (aspirational), and contribute to the greater good of our society. I am spiritually at home when I'm laughing with loved ones, bare feet on the ground, witnessing people's innocence, freedom, autonomy and ingenuity. I love a warm meal and deep conversation in community. I am a spiritual person and get restoration through deep self-reflection and quiet time.
I can’t wait to learn more about you and for you to learn more about me. Let’s work together to shape liberated lives.
